Referring Physician PECOS Phase II Delayed

Posted by J. Paul Spencer, CPC, CPC-H in Fi-Med Services, Hot Topics, In the Press, Industry Updates, J. Paul Spencer, CPC CPC-H

Following up on an earlier post here, CMS announced today that Phase II of Change Requests 6417 & 6421, dealing with referring physician mismatches between the NPI database and the PECOS system, has been delayed until April 5th, 2010.

Phase II of this change request orders the denial of any services referred by a physician who has a conflict between information found on the national NPI registry (NPPES) and the PECOS system. The change to the implementation schedule is being undertaken to give those physicians with conflicting information sufficient time to correct any irregularities.

For the present time, providers who bill for services referred by providers with this conflict will continue to get warning messages stating that the referring physician’s information is inaccurate. If this information has not been updated by the referring provider by April 5th, 2010, these services will be denied.

Fi-Med Focuses On Big Losses For a Healthy Bottom Line in 2009

Posted by Lisa Velasquez in Fi-Med News, In the Press

PRESS RELEASE

Managing an organization’s health doesn’t end with finances, and employees of Fi-Med Management, Inc., a Wisconsin-based medical-industry financial management firm, are taking that message to the streets on Saturday, June 13, 2009 for the 22nd Annual Lombardi Walk/Run for Cancer at Milwaukee County Zoo.

Fi-Med’s new Wellness Team kicked off a weight loss competition earlier this month as an in-house spinoff on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” The competition runs from June 1 through August 31, with cash and other prizes for participants who lose the largest percentage of weight.

“Really, everybody wins when we focus on health,” says Mary Wiczynski, EDI manager at Fi-Med, who heard about the cause through a friend whose family had grappled with cancer. “We’ve gotten a lot of motivating information on health, nutrition and exercise in the last few weeks, and now we’re excited to put that motivation to use for a good cause.”

More than 60 Fi-Med staff and family members will converge on the Milwaukee County Zoo, donning blue team shirts and ready to rally for the community, for charity and for cancer this Saturday at the 22nd Annual Lombardi Walk/Run for Cancer. The event starts at 7:45 a.m. with a 10k run, with a 5k option beginning at 8:30.

“Our job is to manage financial health for our clients, but health is much more holistic than just straight numbers,” says Fi-Med President Adrian Velasquez. “It seems fitting that we get out there and walk the talk by promoting health for our team, and for the communities we do business in.”

Proceeds for the event benefit Vince Lombardi Charitable Funds, a 39-year old fundraising  organization for cancer research, education, patient care and early detection for the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Press Release: Fi-Med Adds Nationwide Electronic Prescription Services For Physicians

Posted by Lisa Velasquez in Fi-Med News, Fi-Med Services, In the Press

Ahead of the curve: Fi-Med gets doctors on board with e-prescriptions before Medicare penalties take effect

In the rush to digitize health information and medical records, even prescriptions are making the jump from notepad to network. Soon the squinting and scrawling and folding and crumpling of the physician-pharmacist relationship will be replaced by high-speed data delivery from point-of-service, at time of service, direct to the pharmacy.

Fi-Med Management, Inc., a medical billing and financial management company headquartered in greater Milwaukee, announced this week the addition of electronic prescription services to its portfolio of client services.

The service, part of Fi-Med’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) package, gives physicians the ability to send error-free, electronic prescriptions directly from point-of-care to the pharmacy without ever lifting a pen—a critical component in the improvement of patient care and safety.

Fi-Med’s e-prescription software partner, SequelMed, provides drug and benefit details and patient medication history from prior patient records, even those generated by other physicians and hospitals. Clients also have access to online drug reference guides, reporting capabilities and 24/7 electronic access to patient prescription data.

On January 1, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released e-prescription codes, available here.

Physicians using e-prescriptions may be eligible for a 2% bonus payment at the end of 2009, provided they’re paid at least 10% of total Medicare Part B reimbursement for services in the office, with the consistent reporting of these codes. That bonus will decrease beginning in 2010, and penalties in the form of reduced payments through Medicare Part B are slated to affect physicians not using electronic prescriptions by 2012.
