HPAS-Healthcare Payments Automation Summit

Posted by Lisa Velasquez in Fi-Med News, Fi-Med Services, In the Press, Industry Updates

The Healthcare Payments Automation Summit (HPAS) , hosted by The Association for Work Process Improvement (TAWPI), will be held September 13-15 in Chicago, IL. This conference will cover all facets of healthcare payment automation as well as address strategic management issues within a variety of healthcare payments areas. Adrian Velasquez, President of Fi-Med, will join EOBReeze President, Rod Baker, to discuss how they worked together to improve automation of healthcare payments at Fi-Med Management, Inc.

Posting payments from a high volume of paper EOBs is challenging, automating the manual process can be equally effortful. Adrian Velasquez, founder and President of Fi-Med Management, Inc. worked with four different solutions that failed to produce results. Finally, Fi-Med achieved automation of this onerous process. Learn what did not work and why, the pitfalls and shortcomings of certain approaches and ultimately what did work. For more information or to register for this event please visit www.tawpi.org.

Meet the Wellness Team

Fi-Med's Wellness Team-Tonique Shirley, Mary Wiczynski, Willie Roby, Nou Xiong, Karla Brown and Rosa Rodriguez

Our Wellness Team is made up of a volunteer group of dedicated employees on a mission to motivate the staff to take a proactive approach to improving their health. Working toward a goal of 100% participation, the Wellness Team meets frequently to create fun ways to get the staff involved. They recently kicked off their own version of NBC’s The Biggest Loser contest with cash prize incentives for those who lose the most weight. Another great idea was the announcment that Fi-Med would participate in the Vince Lombardi run/walk for cancer. The Wellness Team designed Fi-Med t-shirts for the employees to wear and had a great turnout. Everyone who participated really enjoyed spending the day with family and friends for such a great cause.

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a big difference. In order to pursuade people to make healthier snack choices, they placed a basket of fruit where for just .50 cents(to replenish the supply) employees can help themselves to a wide variety of fresh fruit in season. Always looking for opportunities to encourage people to get up and move around, it is not unusual for the Wellness Team to invite others to join them in a power walk during their breaks!

Recently, Fi-Med became a member of the Wisconsin Wellness Council, an affiliate of  the Wellness Councils of America. Members are dedicated to building healthier communities in Wisconsin through health promotion programs at the worksite.

Fi-Med Focuses On Big Losses For a Healthy Bottom Line in 2009

Posted by Lisa Velasquez in Fi-Med News, In the Press

PRESS RELEASE

Managing an organization’s health doesn’t end with finances, and employees of Fi-Med Management, Inc., a Wisconsin-based medical-industry financial management firm, are taking that message to the streets on Saturday, June 13, 2009 for the 22nd Annual Lombardi Walk/Run for Cancer at Milwaukee County Zoo.

Fi-Med’s new Wellness Team kicked off a weight loss competition earlier this month as an in-house spinoff on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” The competition runs from June 1 through August 31, with cash and other prizes for participants who lose the largest percentage of weight.

“Really, everybody wins when we focus on health,” says Mary Wiczynski, EDI manager at Fi-Med, who heard about the cause through a friend whose family had grappled with cancer. “We’ve gotten a lot of motivating information on health, nutrition and exercise in the last few weeks, and now we’re excited to put that motivation to use for a good cause.”

More than 60 Fi-Med staff and family members will converge on the Milwaukee County Zoo, donning blue team shirts and ready to rally for the community, for charity and for cancer this Saturday at the 22nd Annual Lombardi Walk/Run for Cancer. The event starts at 7:45 a.m. with a 10k run, with a 5k option beginning at 8:30.

“Our job is to manage financial health for our clients, but health is much more holistic than just straight numbers,” says Fi-Med President Adrian Velasquez. “It seems fitting that we get out there and walk the talk by promoting health for our team, and for the communities we do business in.”

Proceeds for the event benefit Vince Lombardi Charitable Funds, a 39-year old fundraising  organization for cancer research, education, patient care and early detection for the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Press Release: Fi-Med Adds Nationwide Electronic Prescription Services For Physicians

Posted by Lisa Velasquez in Fi-Med News, Fi-Med Services, In the Press

Ahead of the curve: Fi-Med gets doctors on board with e-prescriptions before Medicare penalties take effect

In the rush to digitize health information and medical records, even prescriptions are making the jump from notepad to network. Soon the squinting and scrawling and folding and crumpling of the physician-pharmacist relationship will be replaced by high-speed data delivery from point-of-service, at time of service, direct to the pharmacy.

Fi-Med Management, Inc., a medical billing and financial management company headquartered in greater Milwaukee, announced this week the addition of electronic prescription services to its portfolio of client services.

The service, part of Fi-Med’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) package, gives physicians the ability to send error-free, electronic prescriptions directly from point-of-care to the pharmacy without ever lifting a pen—a critical component in the improvement of patient care and safety.

Fi-Med’s e-prescription software partner, SequelMed, provides drug and benefit details and patient medication history from prior patient records, even those generated by other physicians and hospitals. Clients also have access to online drug reference guides, reporting capabilities and 24/7 electronic access to patient prescription data.

On January 1, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released e-prescription codes, available here.

Physicians using e-prescriptions may be eligible for a 2% bonus payment at the end of 2009, provided they’re paid at least 10% of total Medicare Part B reimbursement for services in the office, with the consistent reporting of these codes. That bonus will decrease beginning in 2010, and penalties in the form of reduced payments through Medicare Part B are slated to affect physicians not using electronic prescriptions by 2012.

Fi-Med Management, Inc. acquires California and Utah-based Mediplete, looks ahead to another year of growth

Posted by Lisa Velasquez in Fi-Med News

MILWAUKEE, WI – Wisconsin-based Fi-Med Management, Inc. announced last week the acquisition of Mediplete, a growing medical billing firm with offices in Utah and southern California.

The acquisition, completed on Dec. 28, comes at the confluence of two goals: for Mediplete, the need to bring new, more efficient technologies on board for their clients in an IT-savvy environment, and for Fi-Med, the desire to expand its presence into the western U.S.

“It was a natural for the two companies to merge,” says Fi-Med President Adrian Velasquez. “Fi-Med had proven technology with proven results. Mediplete was able to bring more value to their clients without having to increase the cost to the client.”

Fi-Med has welcomed aboard all existing Mediplete employees, including the company’s owners and management team. Mediplete clients, many of them surgical centers and anesthesia groups, will continue to receive the same top-notch services they received before the acquisition, with the addition of Fi-Med’s repertoire of financial medical management services and cutting-edge technology. Fi-Med’s current clients will benefit from the additional knowledge and expertise of Mediplete’s contracting and coding specialists.
